Mary's Beliefs

My mother brought me up without a religious affiliation.  Purposely.  That is my heritage, and I embrace it.  Nonetheless, it can be hard to embrace a heritage without a label.

I've seen people, brought up like me, mistakenly assume that they must be some kind of lapsed Christians.  Because they share many moral values with Christians, they think their parents meant them to be Christians but were too lazy to get up for church on Sundays.  This saddens me.

The lack of a religious affiliation is seen as a failure to choose a religion rather than as a choice in its own right.

Thus the need for a label.  Thus, Quagnosticism...

Quagnosticism

Quagnosticism (derived from the words 'quasi-' and 'agnosticism') is the belief that the Powers That Be don't really care about your beliefs.

What you believe is not of extra-scientific, meta-physical, super-natural import.  A Quagnostic may or may not believe in an afterlife, but he does not believe that his belief -- or lack thereof -- will be the determining factor in his placement in an afterlife (if there is one).  Put simply:  "If there is a god, I do not believe that he cares whether or not I believe in him."

Basically, your beliefs are only important in terms of how they affect your own actions and feelings.

If you are interested in Quagnosticism -- have questions, comments, or wish to be officially counted in the ranks of Quagnostics out there -- feel free to send me an email.  ("Quagnosticism" has a gmail account.)

So far, there are 4 self-avowed Quagnostics.
